aH1n1 update: Does the swine flu virus continue to spread and infect people?
Its been more than 4 months since the first case of aH1n1 flu virus was reported in the Philippines and number of cases continue to increase. It was never thought then that the virus would reach our locality that fast. But just recently classes were suspended for 10 days or so in many private schools and public schools just so the infection will be contained. One of the members in our household manifested flu like symptoms. They were not tested of aH1N1 but I believe, the virus was responsible for their illness. My mother was brought to the ICU and has been confined then for 14 days due to life-threatening pneumonia. Her swab test did not show positive of aH1N1 virus, but I would like to believe the virus was also the agent for making her system susceptible to pneumonia agents.
When classes were resumed, information campaign was conducted by the Department of Health on how to keep one from getting the virus. It was also presented during the symposium the pattern of onset of the disease. As of June 27, there were only 2 cases reported in Cagayan de Oro city, and two weeks later, the number increased to 41. Cases of death in the country due to aH1n1 rose to 6.
In the global scale, the number of countries affected by the pandemic is already 112, accounting for 89,921 cases. It is already confirmed that the virus continues to spread.
But the good news is,aH1N1 is not life threatening for persons with no preexisting disease. The reported rate of mortality is not significant. The DOH Region x also noted that the said flu cases have shown signs of subsiding following the series of supension of classes.
What everyone should be aware of now is how the disease could be transmitted and how should it be prevented.
